Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge Struck by Cargo Ship

Baltimore, MD – A significant incident has rocked the city of Baltimore and drawn national attention as a large cargo ship collided with the iconic Francis Scott Key Bridge, leading to a catastrophic collapse

The Incident

On the early morning of March 26, 2024, a seemingly routine day turned disastrous when the Singapore-flagged container ship, Do, struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge, a vital structure spanning the Patapsco River and part of the Interstate 695 Highway.

The Do, en route from the Port of Baltimore to Colombo, Sri Lanka, experienced a complete blackout, causing it to drift uncontrollably out of the shipping channel. Despite emergency measures, including dropping anchors, the ship collided with a support column of the bridge at approximately 1:28 a.m. The impact was devastating, causing a significant section of the 3-kilometer-long bridge to collapse into the river.

Immediate Aftermath and Emergency Response

The collision was quickly declared a mass casualty event by Baltimore first responders. Two individuals were rescued from the water; one was unharmed, while the other was in serious condition. Reports indicate that up to 20 people may have fallen into the river, with six individuals still missing. Search and rescue efforts have been intensive, with teams working tirelessly to locate the missing persons.

The bridge, completed in 1977 and celebrated as one of the world’s longest continuous truss bridges, now faces an uncertain future.

Structural Impact

The Francis Scott Key Bridge’s collapse was a dramatic sequence triggered by the damage to one of its support columns. The bridge’s truss design, which relies on interconnected parts to distribute weight, suffered catastrophic failure when one leg was compromised. The collapse of the central and southern parts of the bridge, occurring within 30 seconds of the collision, caused a domino effect leading to the complete structural failure.

The Do sustained hull damage above the waterline but remained watertight. Thirteen of its shipping containers were damaged, with two falling into the water. Fortunately, none of the fallen containers carried hazardous substances.

Logistical and Economic Impact

The closure of the Interstate 695 Highway, a crucial link for commuters and transport in the region, has caused significant disruptions. Authorities are currently assessing the damage and considering recovery options. Local officials and the National Steel Bridge Alliance have expressed grave concerns and are actively evaluating the broader impact of the collapse.

Community and Future Safety

The loss of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, alongside the damage to the Do and the ensuing logistical challenges, underscores the critical importance of bridge and shipping safety. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the ship’s blackout and subsequent collision, with the aim of preventing similar incidents in the future.

As the community stands together during this challenging time, they await further updates and the path forward to recovery. The incident highlights the need for stringent safety measures and proactive infrastructure maintenance to ensure such tragedies do not recur.
